Lately I’ve Been Reading:

Ian MacDonald, Revolution in the head: the Beatles’ records and the sixties (2nd rev. ed.) (London: Pimlico, 2005)

I’ve avoided this book. One reason was that I needed to re-acquaint myself with the Beatles’ records. A second reason was that I suspected it would work better, the less the reader knew. In the end, I read it because it popped up in front of me whist I was at work in the library an’ I ‘appened to be between books at the time.

It started as a good read, it painted some very potent pictures and perhaps because it was the last revised version it made fewer assumptions about what was in their heads than I’d been led to believe. On the other hand, the longer it went on the more tedious it became: the author seemed to set a standard for the Beatles’ music that was impossible to sustain, or to even achieve more than fleetingly, and then berate them for not sustaining it. Early on they had yet to achieve this standard so he was a little more charitable, but even then he was judging them against mythical live performances from their pre-fame era. Post-Pepper he seemed to actively resent them for failing to keep to what he’d decided was their highest standards. more »

Snakes & Ladders

  • Parcelforce-3

  • I’ve been expecting a parcel from the US of A, said parcel has arrived in the country but I get a letter demanding Import VAT and a clearance fee. The import invoice arrives on the Wednesday 14th, I go online and pay the clearance fee, but I leave it too late and the clock ticks past midnight and because it’s now the earliest delivery day they offer, I also have to pay an extortionate charge for a Saturday delivery. BASTARDS! Anyway they send me an email receipt, confirming the parcel has been released and the delivery date (but not a time). more »

Isn’t this the sort of match we bought Carroll for? And wasn’t it Adam’s set-pieces that justified his purchase? And once again, I never want to see Kuyt in a Liverpool shirt again! Shit! We need some major surgery in the transfer window!! more »
