“Page Eight” BBC2, 28/08/2011

If I’d known, I wouldn’t have bothered! It’s a spy story, from a major playwright, heavyweight cast, even the first shot of Bill Nighy’s character: it’s all shadows , troubles etched deep in the lines of his ageing, the hugging of the cigarette, a man at a remove from the wider world around him, … So it has to be a series, right? Wrong! It’s a stand-alone film. What a waste! more »

Deep Dramatic Schnippet

Dis-trust’s a terrible habit, do you find that?
There’s a fine line, isn’t there, between calculation and deceit. Must do it better.

With Hope In Our Hearts…

  • Liverpool's ups and downs
  • Strike ONE!
  • Liverpool 3-1 Bolton
Suarez, Lucas, and Enrique were all superb, kudos to Downing, Adam, Henderson, Kuyt, Kelly and Skittles. The new boys can only be more confident after that, although Suarez had obviously offended the referee in a previous life. more »

Lately I’ve Been Reading:

Bram Stoker, Dracula (Salt Lake City: Project Gutenberg, 1995)

I suppose with it having such legendary (née classic) status, one couldn’t help but expect more. Yet, in the end, it was just a genre novel. One of those that’s riveting whilst your reading, but which whenever you put it down leaves your palette exhausted with a surplus of left over sucrose scratching at your teeth and gums, and your metabolism still surfing a tumult of adrenaline.

Chapter by chapter, it’s like the cheapest of detective thrillers, those stories whose plot twist relies so much on that singular coincidence, the sort that keeps you on tenterhooks as long as the lights are out, only for the satisfaction to dissolve as the darkness disappears and your dropped-jaw snags on that bloody big, unbelievable, ‘But… !!!’ (and yet, all that you can actually think about by then, is that you really do need to brush your teeth!) more »
